China Import Costs — Complete Landed Cost Guide

Every cost involved in importing from China, explained clearly. Know your true landed cost before placing any order.

Landed Cost = Factory Price + Freight + Insurance + Import Duties + Sourcing Fees + Inspection Fees + Customs Clearance. Understanding all components prevents budget surprises.

1. Factory Price (Product Cost)

The FOB or EXW price quoted by the factory. This is typically the starting point for all cost calculations. Factory prices for the same product can vary 30–50% between suppliers based on quality, certifications, and production scale.

  • EXW Price: Ex-Works — you collect from factory gate
  • FOB Price: Factory delivers to Chinese port, loaded onto ship — most common quotation basis
  • Target: The factory price should be 30–60% below your selling price to be commercially viable

2. Shipping Costs

Sea Freight (LCL — Less than Container Load)

  • Priced per CBM (cubic meter) or per ton, whichever is higher
  • Typical rates China to India: $80–$200 per CBM (freight only)
  • Best for: Orders between 0.5 and 15 CBM
  • Add: Origin charges ($50–$150), destination charges ($80–$200)

Sea Freight (FCL — Full Container Load)

  • 20ft container: Can hold 25–28 CBM, payload ~21,000 kg
  • 40ft container: Can hold 55–60 CBM, payload ~26,500 kg
  • Rates China to India 20ft: $800–$2,000 (freight only, market-dependent)
  • Best for: Orders above 15 CBM

Air Freight

  • Priced per kg (actual vs. volumetric weight, whichever is greater)
  • Volumetric weight: L×W×H (cm) ÷ 6,000 = kg
  • Rates China to India: $3–$6 per kg (freight only)
  • 4–8x more expensive than sea freight but 4–6x faster

Express Courier (DHL/FedEx/UPS)

  • Priced per kg or per shipment
  • Best for: Samples, small urgent orders under 50 kg
  • Rates China to India 10 kg: ~$80–$150 total
  • Includes customs clearance in most cases

3. Import Duties and Taxes

India Import Duties (Typical)

Cost ComponentRateApplied On
Basic Customs Duty (BCD)0–40%CIF value
Social Welfare Surcharge (SWS)10%BCD amount
IGST5–18%CIF + BCD + SWS
Anti-Dumping Duty (if applicable)VariablePer specific product

Example: Electronics (BCD 20%) on ₹1,00,000 CIF value: BCD = ₹20,000, SWS = ₹2,000, IGST 18% on ₹1,22,000 = ₹21,960. Total duty = ₹43,960 (43.96%)

USA Import Duties (Section 301 Tariffs)

Many Chinese goods face additional Section 301 tariffs ranging from 7.5% to 25% on top of normal duties. Categories affected include electronics, furniture, machinery, and many other consumer goods. Check USTR.gov for current tariff exclusions.

UAE Import Duties

UAE charges 5% customs duty on most imports. One of the lowest duty environments globally, making UAE a popular import hub.

Landed Cost Calculation Example

Importing 500 LED lights from Zhongshan to Mumbai, India:

Factory price (FOB): 500 units × $8$4,000
Sea freight LCL (1.5 CBM × $150/CBM)$225
Origin charges (documentation + handling)$120
Marine insurance (0.4%)$17
CIF value total$4,362
India customs duty (BCD 20% on $4,362)$872
Social Welfare Surcharge (10% of BCD)$87
IGST (18% on $5,321)$958
Destination port charges$150

ChinaBajar sourcing fee (7%)$280
TOTAL LANDED COST$7,064
Per unit landed cost$14.13
vs. factory price per unit ($8)+$6.13 (77% above factory price)

Key insight: In this example, a $4,000 factory price becomes a $7,064 landed cost — 77% more. This is typical for India imports with 20% BCD. Always calculate landed cost, not factory price, when determining profitability.

Tips to Minimize Import Costs

  1. Choose correct HS code: Minor classification differences can mean 5–15% duty difference. Get expert classification help.
  2. Use FCL for large orders: Full container load is significantly cheaper per CBM than LCL above 15 CBM.
  3. Time your orders: Freight rates spike during peak seasons (Aug–Oct, Dec). Order off-peak for 20–40% lower rates.
  4. Negotiate FOB not EXW: Chinese exporters often get better freight rates than foreign importers arranging their own shipping.
  5. Explore free trade agreements: India has FTAs with ASEAN — some goods transshipped via ASEAN countries qualify for lower duties.
  6. Combine shipments: Consolidate multiple products to reduce per-unit logistics cost.
